UConn ISM Patient Databases

The UConn Institute for Sports Medicine's (ISM) mission is to promote the health, performance, and longevity of athletes of all levels and ages through world-class clinical care, education and research. UConn ISM interfaces with both patients of UConn Health and physically active community members (athletes). Through these collaborations, we are establishing large patient databases. These databases will fulfill two primary goals: 1) establish a contact database (Contact Database) to be used for future research needs; 2) create a database to evaluate patient outcomes and the effectiveness of healthcare interventions to optimize patient care (Clinical Database).

UConn ISM Contact Database

The Contact Database is a digital database that contains the following:

-Patient/athlete names
-Clinical Database Number
-Parent/legal guardian names (if patient/athlete is a minor)
-Contact information: Physical and electronic addresses, county, telephone numbers
-Date of birth
-Biologic sex and gender identity
-Race/ethnicity
-Source of enrollment (e.g., high school/college, sport organization)
-ISM service utilized (performance, injury prevention, rehabilitation/return to sport)

The main objectives of the UConn ISM Contact Database are to: a.) enable a way for clinical researchers to identify and contact individuals if they are eligible to participate in a future research study; b.) monitor clinically relevant outcomes over time; and/or c.) communicate with individuals about advancements to their specific population or condition (i.e., previous injury or treatment).

UConn ISM Clinical Database

The Clinical Database is a digital database that contains the following:

-Clinical Database Number
-Age at time of any outcome measure or treatment (in months)
-Biologic sex
-Race/ethnicity
-Source of enrollment (e.g., high school/college, sport organization)ISM service utilized (performance, injury prevention, rehabilitation/return to sport)
-Injury they are being treated for
-Outcome measure data recorded by UConn ISM through Qualtrics as standard of care

The main objectives of the UConn ISM Clinical Database are two fold: 1) to provide a central location for all data already being collected as a standard of care, and 2) create a research registry to conduct future research in the areas of injury prevention, rehabilitation, return to sport, and sports performance. All information and patient outcomes collected within the Clinical Database are currently collected as a standard of care within UConn Health.
